Do I Need to Wear Sunscreen in the Winter?

march 2018 sunscreen specialMore than likely, sunscreen is not at the top of your mind of necessities in your skin care routine during the winter months. What you may not realize, however, is that damaging UV rays don’t stop when summer ends.

While you are less likely to get a visible sunburn during the winter, harmful UV rays are still coming into contact with your skin. Ultraviolet B rays (UVB), the UV rays that cause the redness of a sunburn, are not as prevalent in the winter (though you could still get a winter sunburn in higher altitudes like you’ll find here in Colorado!). However, Ultraviolet A rays (UVA) never go away, no matter the season. These UV rays penetrate your skin deeper than UVB rays and are responsible for skin damage like age spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer.

Even a cloudy day or the fact that you will only be watching the weather from indoors is no excuse for neglecting to apply sunscreen. Clouds and your glass windows unfortunately will not hinder UVA rays from penetrating through to your skin. Summer or winter, cloudy or sunny, applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen is a choice you will want to make in order to keep your skin from premature aging.

At Front Range Dermatology Associates, we’re ready to help you do what is best for your skin.
